Forthcoming BIRAs meetingsSchool of Health, Sport and Bioscience, University of East London will be hosting a Public Lecture given by Professor Roderick Flower FRS entitled Pharmacology 2.0 on 2 November 2011 at 6:00PM in room CC1.01 Stratford campus (for directions visit www.uel.ac.uk/campuses/stratford.htm) A drinks reception will follow the lecture To attend, please email May Nahar at m.nahar@uel.ac.uk by 31st October 2011 Biography: Professor Roderick Flower’s research interest is in the area of inflammation and anti-inflammatory drug mechanisms. He was a major contributor to the ‘Cox inhibitor’ concept of 1971 that explains the action of aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. His most significant work concerns the mechanism of action of the anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid steroids and (later) the cromone anti-allergic drugs. He is recognized worldwide for the discovery of the protein “annexin-A1” as an endogenous anti-inflammatory protein that mediates the anti-inflammatory actions of the glucocorticoids. Professor Flower co-founded the William Harvey Research Institute with the Nobel Laureate the later Sir John Vane where he founded the Centre for Biochemical Pharmacology and served as Institute Director from 2000-2004. Professor Flower is a world renowned pharmacologist who helped to shape this field. He will be sharing with us his insights and thoughts about the future of pharmacology and its role in the health care system and also in society as a whole. |
